Innovative Trade Union Strategies  (2007)

Description

In the run-up to the ETUC Congress in May 2007, the FNV decided to produce a report about the serious challenges faced by trade unions in most Western countries particularly in terms of organising and trade union renewal (two of the key issues at the Congress). The result is an interesting survey of the current situation, including facts and figures on trade union density, and of responses that trade unions have been using to reverse some of the negative trends. The survey identifies a series of successful approaches used by unions in various European countries, including: gaining grass roots support; identifying key issues; building community support; international networks for coping with economic globalisation; pursuing social justice; building alliances and coalitions with civil society organisations; making organising a long-term commitment; cooperating with employers from a position of strength; and winning the "battle of ideas" in today's hostile political climate.

The report can be downloaded below and is also available in printed form (15 euros plus postage and packing).
