European Labour Law Project

The ETUI-REHS is implied in the BLLP since 1998. The BLLP stopped end of 2004. However, since 2005 the Swedish cooperation partners are running along the lines of the BLLP the same kind of project for the region of St. Petersburg and the
Republic of Bashkortostan.

Description

This project, organised by the Swedish Trade Union Confederations, aims at providing unions in those countries with legal support. There are a number of identified common problems related to labour relations in this region. If trade union work is hampered by legal regulations or by the way authorities and/or employers apply the rules, this is likely to have legal implications due to the country's international obligations.

The project makes it possible for the national trade unions to refer to rights according to international and European standards in national for a and if necessary also in international for a, when enforcing workers' and trade union rights in each country respectively.

The major task of the project is thus to provide case-related legal backup in the form of legal analysis and advice when a trade union intends to either litigate, taking pilot cases to national and international courts; or to start negotiations with employers and governments when for example new laws are drafted. To this end an expert panel, composed of international legal experts is established. A project committee composed of representatives of the ETUC, ICFTU, Swedish Trade Union Confederation, and trade unions from the concerned region, is set up as an advisory body implementing the project.

The abovementioned researchers are member of expert panel and the project and the case decision committee. Where they provide their expertise in relation to international and European Labour Law, taking into consideration such sources as: European Social Charter,  Social acquis communautaire and comparative material.
