The Trade Union Merger Process
Trade unions in Europe are adjusting to changes in political circumstances, labour market conditions and to new forms of regulation. This project examines these issues by means of research on trade union mergers in ten countries. The project comprises two distinct, yet complementary, elements.
Description
The first element focuses on developments in Germany and Britain. It assesses the merger processes in the two countries by reference to mergers involving four unions: the GMB and UNISON in the UK, and Ver.di and IG BCE in Germany. The unions are paired comparisons in that the GMB and IG BCE organise large memberships in the chemicals, glass and energy industries, while Ver.di and UNISON are the largest public sector unions in the two countries. Interviews have been conducted at both union head offices and in the localities to assess the impact of mergers at various levels within the unions. A wide range of hitherto unpublished financial evidence has also been collected, which, together with documentary evidence, will supplement the interview-based evidence. A research report has been prepared for the Anglo-German Foundation (a long version 302 pages and a short version 65 pages). In addition, a book is now being prepared for publication.
The second element of the research focuses on the merger process in ten countries. A network of researchers drawn from these countries are undertaking the research. The network is finalising the publication of a book on the trade union merger process in the ten countries. This book will comprise ten country chapters, which are now complete, and three horizontal or thematic chapters, written by members of the research network working in teams. The book will be published during 2004.
