What is a Modernised Trade Union?
Throughout Europe trade unions are facing a series of challenges. In brief, trade unions are losing members; trade union organisation and practice too often reflect historical origins rather than present day needs and aspirations; trade unions are losing influence within the polity; and trade unions are no longer attractive to large numbers of potential members. This is not to imply that trade unionists are not trying to adjust. To the contrary, trade unionists have introduced a vast range of reforms intended to 'modernise' their structure, organisation and practice. This project will identify the nature and outcome of these chnages. In other words, it will attempt to establish the criteria that constitute a modernised trade union.

Description
In pursuing these objectives, three inter-related areas of modenisation will be addressed. first, issues associated with internal union relations will be assessed. This assessment will embrace forms of leadership, democracy and participation. Second, the nature of external relations will be examined. This will involve examinations of the relations with employers, the state, other trade unions and union confederations. Third, the content of policy will be explored. In essence, this aspect of the research will explore how trade union policy has adjusted (needs to adjust) to shifts in labour markets and personal characteristics, such as the changing relationship between individual and collective rights within labour markets.
Initially, the principal research method will be structured interviews conducted with trade union policy makers from a range of countries.
