Prospects for board level representation of workers

under the European Company Statue in the new member states

As well as the 15 EU member states established before enlargement,  the 10 new member states must enable companies to set up an European Company on their territory from 8th October 2004. It is important to emphasize the new potential for employee involvement coming from the SE-directive, not only in terms of information and consultation rights, but also in opening the possibility to influence management decisions. For the employees of a future SE, this kind of involvement in a company creates a big challenge. It is up to them to show that they are fully prepared for the consequences; dealing with economic matters as well as shaping social impacts so that  their influence will improve the social responsibility of businesses.

Description

There is not only a notable lack of  information about real practices and the meaning of employee involvement concerning the new member states which will be filled by this project. It is also from an utmost academic importance to examine the role and the meaning of real workers participation in enterprises on the territory of the NMS and its impacts on the ongoing Europeanisation of work relations.

Additionally, when European Companies are set up, it can be assumed that some will either take their seat in one of the new member states, or parts of the SE will be located on their territories. It is therefore important that the real situation and the possible existing links to European legislation should be examined. ETUI will take profit when getting offered an exclusive access to exchange of experiences which will be organised by this project amongst at least practitioners from Czech Republic, Malta, Poland, Slovak Republic together with experts from Austria, Denmark and Germany which represents different systems of board level representation in Europe. Understanding, not only of what a workers' representative actually does in a boardroom but also, more generally, how such situations can be managed and justified, will therefore be central to the project.

In terms of products generated by the project, the main outcome will be a new publication which will add to and enhance existing material in the publication,’ The European Company: Prospects for Board-Level Representation’, particularly by including information on the new member states.

ETUI refers with its involvement in this project to the knowledge which has been created by the ongoing SEEUROPE project.  It is important to note that the ETUI only will contribute his expertise and not will be receiving any financial support through this project.
